Abrasion groups

The abrasion group is always stated in the description of the respective mosaic products

Abrasion = surface wear occurs on floor coverings as a result of abrasive, rubbing stresses and can become visible on glazed tiles as a change in the gloss of the surface. Glazed stoneware tiles (DIN EN 176) are divided into groups according to their resistance to abrasion and can therefore be assigned to application areas.

The abrasion resistance (wear group) of glazed stoneware tiles ceramic or glass as well as other materials is specified by the manufacturer or can be found in the product description.

Abrasion group I:

(very light wear)
Floor coverings in rooms that are walked on with soft-soled shoes such as slippers or bare feet at very low footfall frequency without scratching soiling, e.g. bedrooms and sanitary rooms in private residential buildings.

Abrasion group II:

(light wear)
Floor coverings in rooms that are walked on with normal but clean footwear at low footfall frequency without scratching soiling e.g. private housing without direct access to the outside and not in kitchens, entrance areas, outdoor flooring and/or stairs.

Abrasion group III:

(medium wear)
Floor coverings in rooms that are subject to normal footwear wear with medium foot traffic and light scratching soiling, e.g. private residential construction, but not in kitchens, as well as non-residential construction floor coverings with comparable wear, such as hotel rooms and bathrooms.

Abrasion group IV:

(heavier wear)
Floor coverings in rooms that are subject to heavy wear and tear with normal footwear, e.g. entrance areas, terraces, kitchens, sales and utility rooms, offices, hospitals, hotels, schools and administrative buildings.

Abrasion group VI:

(Heavy use.)
Newly developed glazes enable the production of glazed stoneware tiles whose surface wear resistance far exceeds the requirements of abrasion group IV and is therefore no longer covered by DIN EN 154. The international standard ISO 10545 T.7 is therefore in preparation, which is expected to define an abrasion group V. For areas of application with very heavy public traffic, tiles in abrasion group V are available, which have a very high wear resistance, e.g. hairdressing salons, bakeries, snack bars, entrance halls for hotels, banks and restaurants.
